TV Manufacturers are ready to test the depth of the market for 3-D

This is supposedly one 3-D television is becoming the hot new thing: the updated sets and disk players are coming out, and 3-D cable channels are in the works. But it is not clear the idea will reach out and grab the viewer trends.

Except that in the spring for expensive new TV sets, people would have to put in awkward special glasses to give the illusion of image depth. What limits the 3-D view of the period, while viewers can sit and focus on film or TV show.

It is one thing to put on 3-D glasses in the theater, but "at home, you're with other people in the living room, kitchen work and do other things," said Greg Ireland research company IDC.

Unfazed by the potential hang-up, most TV manufacturers have started revealing their 3-D model on Wednesday before the official opening of the International Consumer Electronics Show in Las Vegas.

Tim Baxter, president of Samsung Electronics Co. s consumer division, said in an interview that 10 to 14 percent of the approximately 35 million televisions sold in the U.S. this year will be 3-D capable.

Motorola has found that 3-D on a great opportunity expensive TVs this year. It is team work with companies DreamUorks Animation SKG Inc. to Blu-ray 3-D version of the film "Monsters vs. Aliens" exclusively for customers Samsung's 3-D TV.

Panasonic Corp. said it will debut four 3-D sets this spring, but they are not LCD sets, the most common type of flat panels. Instead, it uses a Panasonic plasma panels, saying viewing quality will be superior to the 3-D on the LCD.

Sony Corp., said the 3-D sets will be out this summer. Some will come with glass, others will be "3-D Ready," which means that customers need to supplement with a special plug-in device and the glass 3-D display.

LG Electronics Inc. said it will introduce 47-inch and 55-inch flat panel TV with 3-D capabilities in May.

Nokia does not disclose the exact price for your new sets. But Tim Alessi, director of product development at LG Electronics USA, said the 3-D TV sets will probably cost $ 200 to $ 300 more than similar sets of flat-screen, without the possibility of 3-D, which are already running more than $ 1000 .

Even Vizio Inc., which is one of the leaders of TV markets in the U.S., but mainly sells cheap sets, said that the 3-D capabilities of the larger, higher-end sets.

Manufacturers do not count on the 3-D to take over immediately. Color TV and high definition capture for many years. As they progress past the 3-D program requires an upgrade through TV and film infrastructure, from shooting to editing to distribution. Incidentally, Samsung and Dreamuorks working with Technicolor, which is a pioneer in color films to 3-D right.

Of course, movies in 3-D is around 1950 and from time to time are billed as the next big thing in entertainment. And technically speaking 3-D view in the house, it was possible for the last few years. But it was not a good way to 3-D movies and shows to watch.

Obstacle that has expanded far this year, and plans for the 3-D version of the Blu-ray Disc is tightened. Players are expected this spring. Also, the satellite broadcaster DirecTV Inc. said Wednesday it will send the upgrade software for most of their set top boxes in June that will enable the reception of 3-D.

On Tuesday, two major cable networks - ESPN and discovery - they said they planned to start Brilliant 3-D entertainment into homes for the first time.

ESPN plans to have a channel running in time to show World Cup matches in 3-D 11th June. Discovery Communications Inc. will partner IMAKS Corp. and Sony to present its full-time 3-D network in the 2011th

Samsung is not waiting for the 3-D Programming: That said, your set will be able to convert a standard 2-D program for 3-D on the fly. The effect probably will not be as good as the original 3-D image, but the "tide of consumers over", while another 3-D program, "said Baxter.

Toshiba is taking the same tack. Plans to roll a new line of five TV sets this year to perform 2-D to 3-D conversion in a separate box with a powerful processor similar to the one used in Sony PlayStation 3. Like other manufacturers, Toshiba does not publish prices for the sets, but will probably be expensive.

TV producers, film studios and broadcasters are counting on the excitement around the latest wave of 3-D films in cinemas to finally drive interest in adapting technologies for the home. Specifically, James Cameron's "Avatar" set a new standard for 3-D films and has surpassed $ 1 billion at the box office. This shows that the 3-D is viable for more than just computer-animated children or family, such as films "Sunny With a Chance of Meatballs."

"Nada industry are undoubtedly built on the success of" Avatar, ' "said NPD analyst Ross Rubin.

But it is not clear, people will be willing to reset the price premium for the 3-D home - at least for a few years - or even that experience translate well to cinema in the living room. (It is possible to do 3-D TV without glasses, but these solutions usually require viewers to his head in one particular area of the image quality is also less ..)

Viewing 3-D disks will require new Blu-Ray player, which could cost several hundred dollars, it is possible to sick people who invested in the regular Blu-ray players in the past few years. However, PlayStation 3 owners are in luck: Nokia says that the free software upgrade to allow them to play 3-D movies.

It can also be difficult to tempt customers to buy new TVs for flat-panel spree in the last few years.

J. Weil, 42, a day trader from San Francisco, said he was unlikely to jump to the purchase of 3-D technology, immediately after he bought a new 52-inch, high definition, about six months ago for $ 1,800. He has no problems with setup.

"I'm suffering, although the 2-D," he said Sunday inside the Best Buy store in San Francisco.

Analyst Riddhi Patel of iSuppli Corp., said a target market is likely to be people who have moved panels bought an apartment a few years ago in his room and now we want the new sets in their living room.

Or TV manufacturers can count on hitting the mainstream after the first goal for enthusiasts - people such as Michael Pearce, 39, supervisor at the biotechnology company.

Pearce loves the thrill of new electronics, although his family says he went into the water. He says he has bought 12 flat screen in the last three years and sell the old on eBay whenever you upgrade.

"I'd like to see how I would push the envelope to see what's next." He said. "Three-D TV is like, WOW you have to go to movies. Yes."
